There aren't many bands out that my boyfriend and I equally enjoy listening to, but Oh Wonder is definitely one of them. Their self-titled debut album is one of the only albums we can both agree on to listen to during road trips, and as a result it has been played a lot over the last year. When we saw that they were coming to Canada, but that their Edmonton show was sold out, we were ok with spending a little more than usual to snag some tickets from stubhub.
The opener was a band from California called Lany. They sounded alright, but didn't really stand out to me from other indie-rock bands. The lead singer was pretty good looking though, and I did enjoy the song titled "Where the hell are my friends" and smiled to myself when I heard it the next day while shopping in American Eagle.
Now back to Oh Wonder..The humble British duo seemed very grateful and surprised that their Canada tour was selling out and that they have achieved such a high level of fame in such a short time. It's really not that surprising though, as their music is beautifully simple, yet full of catchy hooks and base. It has been described by Wikepedia as "mellow, slow-grooving, R&B-flecked alt-po" and it appeals to a heck of a lot of people as their quick international popularity suggests.
They played almost their entire album and every song sounded fantastic live. They played slowed down, less bass-y versions of White Blood and Midnight Moon which was cool. My favourite song was Drive, but Technicolour Beat - which they ended the show with - was extremely epic live.
Another memorable moment of the show was when Josephine explained the meaning behind "All we do". Apparently it's about gathering the courage to do what we have been putting off for too long and following our passions and challenging yourself as a human even if it's scary and involves taking risks. Her words followed by the beautiful song really resonated with me long after the show was over.
